Thredbo has about 34.9 snowy days a year, and summer snow is not unusual. That tells you most of what you need to know about planning a trip here: the Thredbo seasons shape everything, from what you pack to what you do.

This page walks through the year month by month using climate averages for the Thredbo area (1991-2020), and pulls out the seasonal highlights the village is known for. The one named festival is a blues music festival in summer, so the rest of the page focuses on what the mountain does through the seasons.

Thredbo seasons at a glance

The climate is typical of the Snowy Mountains: cold, snowy winters and cool to mild summers. Thredbo Village fits the cold oceanic climate type (Cfb) in the Köppen classification. Recorded temperatures have ranged from -12.8 to 34.8 °C, so the extremes are wide even if the averages are gentle.

The village sits at 1,365 metres, in the valley of the Thredbo River at the foot of the Ramshead Range. Its Top Station, some 577 metres higher, is far colder and has recorded some of the lowest temperatures in Australia. Pack for the mountain, not just the village.

Winter: the main event

Winter is when Thredbo draws about 700,000 visitors a year (a 2005 figure). When the mountain is fully covered, it has the longest ski runs in Australia. The Crackenback Supertrail is the longest single run in the country, and the longest continuous descent, from the top of Karel's T-Bar to Friday Flat, is 5.9 kilometres, though it links several trails.

There are over 50 runs graded green, blue and black diamond, and 14 lifts including the Merritts Gondola, which opened in 2020 as Australia's first purpose-built gondola. Thredbo has the steepest overall terrain of any mainland Australian resort and the highest lifted point, 2,037 metres at Karel's T-Bar. Our Thredbo skiing page goes into the slopes in more detail.

Snowmaking and the lower slopes

Because the village is low, the lower half of the mountain does not always hold natural snow. Thredbo has spent almost $6 million on the largest snowmaking system in the Southern Hemisphere, covering about 65 hectares and running mostly at night. We would not book a trip around the lower runs in a thin season; the upper mountain is the safer bet.

Terrain parks and getting around

Freestyle skiers have several parks, from Wombat World for young children on Friday Flat to Antons Park for experienced riders. Ridercross changes location each year. In winter a free shuttle bus links the Valley Terminal, Friday Flat and most of the lodges. If you are after a bed on the snow, start with Thredbo snow accommodation.

Spring and autumn: the shoulder months

Autumn cools quickly. Average maximums fall from 21.7 °C in March to 11.8 °C in May, and overnight minimums approach 3 °C. April is the driest month at 54.0 mm. Spring runs the other way, with maximums rising from 11.7 °C in September to 18.9 °C in November, though rain days stay high at around 12 a month.

At the end of the ski season, mats have been placed on the lower slopes so skiers can reach the bottom. These months suit people who want the mountain quieter, but expect changeable weather and plan for rain.

Summer: hiking, biking and blues

Summer brings roughly 300,000 visitors (again a 2005 figure). Thredbo becomes a hiking and summer sport destination, with rock climbing and abseiling, fishing, cross-country cycling and downhill mountain biking. The village also hosts a blues music festival. Check current details with Thredbo or Visit NSW, the official state tourism site, before you plan around it.

January and February average maximums of 25.7 and 24.9 °C, with nights near 11 °C. That is pleasant, but the mountain can still surprise you, and summer snow is not uncommon.

Planning around the seasons

Thredbo is about 500 kilometres south of Sydney, reached by the Alpine Way via Cooma, Berridale and Jindabyne. Cooma Coaches run buses and coaches from Jindabyne and Cooma. Our Thredbo getting there page has the detail on routes.

The village has about 4,150 beds but only around 477 permanent residents, so book accommodation early for a busy-season trip. Browse Thredbo accommodation first. If the village is full or beyond your budget, Jindabyne is an option, and Discovery Parks - Jindabyne offers powered sites and cabins; contact the park for current rates.

For a taste of the snow without organising everything yourself, the 1 Day Thredbo Snow Adventure is listed from $169. For background on the resort, see Wikipedia: Thredbo, or start at our Thredbo destination guide.
