Byron Bay is one of the most up-market residential areas on the Australian east coast, and Byron Bay luxury holidays suit that reputation. The town sits in the far north-eastern corner of New South Wales, 772 kilometres north of Sydney and 165 kilometres south of Brisbane.
Below we set out the premium tours on this site, highest price first, then the scenery and experiences that make a splurge worthwhile, and the months when the weather is kindest. Start with our Byron Bay destination guide if you are still deciding on dates.

Food, drink and a private surf
Brewery and distillery day
This tour runs six and a half hours, starts at 11 AM and visits four venues, split between breweries and distilleries. Guests sample around 15 to 20 drinks with guidance at each stop. A substantial lunch is included, with options for all dietary requirements, and non-beer drinkers can swap to cider, wine, seltzer or ginger beer. Hotel pickups and air-conditioned transport are part of the package.

Private surf lesson
The two-hour private lesson is tailored to your ability, and your instructor reads the conditions and picks the best break for the day. Soft boards help you progress quickly and catch multiple waves. The coastline offers ten different breaks within reach, so there is room to match swell and wind to your level. Longboard surfers first used the natural breaks at The Pass, Wategos and Cosy Corner in the 1960s, which is how Byron began as a travellers' destination.
Longer surf trip
The six-day Australian Surfing and Camping Tours combine daily lessons at breaks such as Byron Bay and Seal Rocks with nights under canvas. Groups are small, up to nine, with qualified coaches using video analysis. Camping gear and all breakfasts and dinners are provided, and it suits first-timers and experienced surfers alike.
Glamping and the glow worm tunnel
For a softer night out, the three-day rainforest glamping adventure near Byron Bay is listed from AUD 895. After dark, the glow worm tour takes you by e-bike, fitted with lights, through a 500-metre limestone tunnel. Thousands of bioluminescent creatures line the walls, and you see them in their undisturbed environment. Your guide collects you from your accommodation.
If you would rather sleep in a room, see our pages on Byron Bay resorts and the wider Byron Bay accommodation options. Two Discovery Parks sites, in Byron Bay and Ballina, offer powered sites and cabins for a more modest base.
Scenery worth the splurge
Cape Byron is the easternmost point of mainland Australia. The Cape Byron walking trail is a 3.7-kilometre loop that takes about two hours, passing coastal rainforest, cliffs and ocean views, and it ends at the 1901 lighthouse. Cape Byron Lightstation on Lighthouse Road is heritage listed. An oceanway also lets you walk or cycle from the centre of town to the lighthouse.

Humpback whales migrate along the coast from June to November, and whale watching is a significant part of the local economy. Temperate and tropical waters meet here, which makes Julian Rocks, 2.5 kilometres from town in the Cape Byron Marine Park, a popular spot for diving and snorkelling. Inland, subtropical rainforest is within easy reach, including Nightcap National Park and Minyon Falls.
On the ground, the weekly farmers' market at Butler Street Reserve runs on Thursday mornings with over 70 local farmers. The Artisan Market at Railway Park runs on Saturday evenings from October to Easter. For more ideas, browse Byron Bay activities and Byron Bay dining.
Best months for Byron Bay luxury holidays
Byron Bay has a humid subtropical climate with warm summers and mild winters. Its ocean-facing cape is exposed to moist easterly flows, so annual rainfall tops 1,500 mm, more than Brisbane or the Gold Coast. Averages for the area, 1991 to 2020:
| Month | Max C | Min C | Rain mm | Rain days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 26.8 | 21.4 | 136.9 | 13.8 |
| February | 26.4 | 21.3 | 135.4 | 13.8 |
| March | 25.3 | 20.2 | 128.4 | 15.9 |
| April | 23.2 | 17.8 | 84.3 | 13.4 |
| May | 20.8 | 15.1 | 93.5 | 11.2 |
| June | 18.8 | 13.0 | 103.9 | 9.6 |

On these figures, August and September are the driest months, with September the driest at 39.6 mm over about seven rain days. Winter days reach around 19 degrees, which suits the cliff walk, and whale season runs from June to November. September to October is our pick for dry days, mild temperatures and whales still passing. Summer is hot, with a daily average of 27 degrees, but its evenings can be wet.
