Yamba has a population of 6,405 at the 2021 census, yet in the holiday period that number can triple. That one fact shapes the whole calendar, so the best way to plan Yamba events and visits is to start with when the crowds arrive.
Through the year the town is known for busy school-holiday periods, a whale-watching season, a monthly market and one annual music festival.
Peak seasons in Yamba
The busiest times follow the school holidays. Peak tourist seasons are December to January, Easter, mid-year and October. If you want a lively town with plenty of company on the beach, those are your windows. If you would rather have more room, the stretches between them are the quieter choice.
Families should think about these dates early, since the town fills when schools are out. Our page on Yamba holidays with kids covers the family side, and the Yamba accommodation pages are worth a look before you lock in dates.
What the climate is like
Yamba has a humid subtropical climate, classed as Cfa under the Köppen system. It gets high rainfall, but it still records 131.2 clear days a year, so a good share of the calendar is bright. Expect warm, humid conditions as the general character of the place, with sunny spells well represented even in a wet year.
Whale season, May to October
Between May and October, whales can be seen passing by. A good spot to watch from is Lovers Point Rock Wall at the northern tip of Pippi beach. Dolphins are plentiful all around Yamba and can be seen swimming, surfing and fishing quite close to shore.
If you would rather be on the water, there are boat cruises in town; see Yamba cruises for more.
Yamba River Markets
The Yamba River Markets run at Ford Park on the fourth Sunday of every month. You will find local musicians, fresh produce from local farmers, food stalls, and arts and craft tents. It is a simple, regular fixture, and for anyone planning around a weekend it is the easiest event to build a trip around.
Surfing The Coldstream Festival
Once a year Yamba hosts Surfing The Coldstream Festival. It offers an outdoor community stage with predominantly roots-based music, broad enough to appeal to the mix of residents and visitors. Performers share their acts, drumming, dancing and cultural art exhibitions, and there are food stalls and amusement rides. Check current dates with Clarence Valley tourism or Visit NSW before you plan around it.
Everyday highlights in any season
Some things do not depend on the calendar. The two pubs and two clubs, including the Pacific Hotel and Yamba Shores Tavern, along with the golf club and bowling club, all host regular live performances. The Yamba Museum on River Street, run by the Port of Yamba Historical Society, tells the story of the town, the port, surfing, fishing and sugar. The Old Kirk attached to it has changing historical displays and art exhibitions, which makes a decent wet-day option.
For more ideas, see Yamba activities and attractions. Popular pastimes include fishing, surfing, kayaking, bike riding and camping. For background on the town itself, there is the Wikipedia page on Yamba.
