Tamworth specials depend largely on timing. The city hosts the Tamworth Country Music Festival in late January, and that is when a trip to the Country Music Capital of Australia is most in demand.

This page looks at how to get good value: when the city is busiest, what the climate suggests about quieter months, which sights cost little, and the kinds of stays on offer.

When Tamworth is busiest

The big date is the Tamworth Country Music Festival. It began in 1973, when radio station 2TM hosted the first Australasian Country Music Festival, and it now runs continuously for 11 days at the end of January. It is recognised as the second-biggest country music festival in the world after Nashville.

That makes late January the obvious peak. If the music is your priority, it is worth the premium. If you simply want a quieter visit, we reckon other times of year make more sense. Our Tamworth events page has more on what is on through the calendar.

Tamworth is also recognised as the National Equine Capital of Australia, because of the many equine events held in the city and the Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre, the biggest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. Event weekends there may affect how busy the city feels, so check dates before you book.

What the climate says about quieter months

Tamworth has a humid subtropical climate (Cfa), with hot summers and relatively cool winters. Temperatures exceed 35 °C on around 20 to 25 days a year. For visitors who find that heat hard going, the cooler months are the more comfortable choice, and they fall outside the late-January festival rush.

If you want a quieter trip, look at the cooler part of the year and pack for cool conditions.

Free and low-cost things to see

Several of Tamworth's best-known sights can be enjoyed from the street without a tour booking.

  • The Golden Guitar. Erected in 1988 as a symbol of the town's country music roots, it stands 12 metres tall.
  • Peel Street. The council greened it during the 1990s streetscape renewal, and it is an easy place for a walk through the city centre.
  • The Peel River. The city sits on its banks, and the Wentworth Mounds rise to about 800 metres behind the main centre.
  • The First Town of Lights story. On 9 November 1888 Tamworth became the first place in Australia with electric street lighting from a municipally owned power station.

Caravan parks and places to stay

Accommodation in the area ranges from riverside camping to motels, country cottages and heritage pubs. Contact operators directly for current rates. Our Tamworth accommodation page lists stays in more detail.

At the other end of the scale, Goonoo Goonoo Station offers seven private cottages on a heritage-listed working cattle property outside the city. It is a splurge rather than a saving.

Getting there and planning the drive

Tamworth is about 420 km north of Sydney on the New England Highway, and 280 km inland from Port Macquarie on the Oxley Highway. It is almost midway between Brisbane and Sydney, which makes it a natural stop on a longer road trip. Fuel and time are part of any budget, so factor those in. For broader planning, see the Tamworth travel guide, and for official state information try Visit NSW. Background on the city is also at Wikipedia: Tamworth, New South Wales.
