Kings Cross tours come down to one private, four-hour drive that links the city, the harbour and Bondi, with Kings Cross as one of its stops.
Below we set out what that tour covers, how long it takes and what it costs, then add some background on the Cross, the weather through the year and a few ideas for planning around it.
The Kings Cross tour on this site
The Private Sydney City and Bondi Beach Half Day Tour runs for 4 hours and is priced from AUD 260. It is a private tour, led by a driver who knows the city inside out, so the pace is set around your group rather than a coach schedule. Check current prices and times with the operator before booking.
| Tour | Length | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Private Sydney City and Bondi Beach Half Day Tour | 4 hours | from AUD 260 |
What the half day tour covers
The idea is to squeeze Sydney's greatest hits into four hours. You cover the sandstone laneways of the Rocks, see the Opera House and Harbour Bridge from several angles, and stroll through the Botanic Gardens. From there the route heads east to Bondi and its golden sweep of beach.

On the way the tour takes in Woolloomooloo's converted warehouses, Kings Cross and its gritty character, and the clifftop views at South Head. Kings Cross is a passing stop rather than the whole event, which suits a first visit. If you want to linger, our Kings Cross attractions page is the place to plan that.
What you will see in Kings Cross
Kings Cross sits about 2 kilometres east of the Sydney CBD, within the suburb of Potts Point, and locals call it The Cross. In the early 19th century it was a prestigious address, and in 1828 Governor Sir Ralph Darling subdivided the land into large estates. Street names such as Roslyn, Orwell and Kellett still recall the mansions that stood there.
In the 20th century it became Sydney's bohemian heartland, home to writers, actors and painters, and later its main entertainment and red-light district. The lockout laws, introduced in March 2014, closed several nightclubs and pubs, and the NSW government announced their end in March 2021.
Landmarks worth a look
The El Alamein Fountain stands at the entrance to Fitzroy Gardens, on the corner of Darlinghurst Road and Macleay Street. It was designed in 1961 by the New Zealand-born architect Robert Woodward and commemorates soldiers who died in two battles at El Alamein in 1942. Its dandelion design has been copied for fountains around the world. The Empire Hotel and the Bourbon & Beefsteak building facade on Darlinghurst Road are heritage-listed too.
Best time of year for a Kings Cross tour
A tour that mixes harbour views, gardens and a beach suits dry, mild days. Sydney gets roughly 25 to 29 sunny days a month all year, so there is no truly bad season, though rain days vary. August is the driest by days, with about 5 rain days and 37 mm. February is the wettest month at about 87 mm over 10 to 11 rain days.
| Month | Max C | Min C | Rain mm | Rain days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 25.5 | 19.3 | 67.8 | 9.4 |
| February | 24.9 | 19.2 | 87.3 | 10.5 |
| March | 23.6 | 17.9 | 70.1 | 10.8 |
| April | 21.4 | 15.0 | 54.2 | 7.9 |
| May | 18.6 | 12.0 | 45.8 | 6.5 |
| June | 16.3 | 10.0 | 65.3 | 8.1 |
| July | 15.8 | 8.7 | 35.8 | 5.9 |
| August | 17.0 | 9.0 | 37.2 | 5.1 |
| September | 19.4 | 11.2 | 40.4 | 6.4 |
| October | 21.2 | 13.5 | 50.6 | 7.7 |
| November | 22.5 | 15.5 | 70.3 | 8.9 |
| December | 24.2 | 17.5 | 56.2 | 8.8 |
Those are 1991 to 2020 averages for the Sydney area, about 1 km from Kings Cross. Our own view: April to May or September to October look the sweet spot, with mild highs of 19 to 21 degrees and fewer wet days.
