Explore the metropolitan center of Armidale on a self-guided walk or a guided bus tour and see its spectacular cathedrals and colonial structures. Among the landmarks is the Saumarez Homestead, a mansion built between 1888 and 1906, which is open to the public. If you’re looking for some artistic inspiration, visit the New England Regional Art Museum, host to the works of several famous artists, and the Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Keeping Place, home to aboriginal traditional art. Armidale is also home to a Railway Museum and a Museum of antics, both very much worth a visit.
No visit to the Cathedral City is complete without a trip to the Saints Mary and Joseph Catholic Cathedral. This awe striking place of worship is a magnificent example of how buildings such as these were constructed centuries ago. High vaulted ceilings with stained glass windows and intricate internal masonry and woodwork. Closeby is the St. Peter’s Cathedral, another beautiful church, known for its stunning garden. Among these places of history and culture are quality restaurants, bars, cafes, and wineries. Get some good food and drink at the Goldfish Bowl, Wayward Trails, and the Welder’s Dog. Sample some artisan cool-climate wines at Petersons Winery, Whyworry Wines, and Merilba Estate. It’s also worth picking up some fresh produce at the Armidale Farmers’ Market, which is held every second Sunday of the month.
For a truly complete Armidale experience, Waterfall Way gives road trippers a vast selection of stunning natural scenery complemented by cultural interludes and environmental wonders for a scenic drive that spans just over 200 kilometres. You could cover the scenic drive of the Waterfall Way in around 2.5 hours but it could take you all day with so many incredible stops along the way. The scenic drive starts at Coffs Harbor and runs through five national parks and winds through lush forest, waterfalls, open woods and farmland as you approach the city itself.
Armidale also offers other forms of leisure such as the Armidale Golf Club, Monckton Aquatic Centre, and the Armidale Sports and Recreation Centre for all your sports and fitness needs.
