Tamworth

Tamworth is one of the two largest cities located in the New England district. Its location at the foot of the Moonbi Ranges provides a more temperate climate than those centres on top of the New England ranges and this is a thriving and vibrant country city.

As Tamworth holds the title of Australia’s country music capital, many visitors are attracted to the city to explore its country music heritage, which has continually developed over the past 40 years. What many people don’t realize is Tamworth has a wealth of musical development and its not all country. The Tamworth regional Conservatorium of music is a training ground for budding musicians from throughout the district. Sport is a major drawcard in the district which is blessed with abundant facilities for lovers of cricket, netball, baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer, football, athletics, golf, water polo and swimming. An increasing number of equine sports are conducted in Tamworth throughout the year including the “Futurity” the national cutting horse association championships which lures contestants from around the world.

There are country music icons to be visited including the big golden guitar, the Australian Country music foundation and the walk a country mile exhibition, all part of the “drive a country mile” tour of the country mile attractions of the city. Wether you are a country music fan or not , your going to recognize the names of Smokey Dawson, Slim Dusty, John Williamson, Gina Jeffrey’s, Lee Kernaghan & Kasey Chambers who have all left their mark or at least their hand print in concrete for all to see at the hands of fame park.

Around town, Tamworth has a great range of parks and reserves, self guided heritage walks and drives as well as art and craft galleries. Tamworth’s picturesque racecourse comes alive with colour and action on a regular basis throughout the year. If you’re in town for one of these country race days, head along and enjoy the friendly atmosphere.
