Bathurst Holidays With Kids

Bathurst is the perfect country getaway for families, just 2.5-3 hours from Sydney. It offers a lively city center steeped in history, surrounded by gold-rush villages and beautiful natural landscapes. Australia’s first inland settlement is the perfect location for a family holiday with its unusual mix of urban and rural, and an abundance of parks, playgrounds and bike paths.

The route to Bathurst runs right through the Blue Mountains. The manufacturing store within the Hydro Majestic complex is the perfect spot to break the Sydney journey. It’s just next to the highway, so it’s a fast and straightforward way to catch some great view shots, stretch the legs, and grab an excellent coffee and a delight from their grocery store.

To families with children, a visit to the Australian Fossil & Mineral Museum is an absolute must in the heart of the city. It is housed in the Public School building of 1876, which underwent a major renovation before it was equipped with stunningly beautiful expositions. Abercrombie House is a Bathurst region heritage gem. Established in the 1870s, it is the Morgan family’s home today that has spent several years restoring the magnificent house and its outbuildings and grounds. Abercrombie House is open to the general public with a program of guided tours throughout the year.

The awesome Bathurst Adventure Playground has been created with a dinosaur theme in mind. It contains a vast array of play equipment and landscape structures designed to encourage children’s imagination. It was opened to the community on 21 December 2009, providing a state-of-the-art outdoor play space and recreational facility for the entire family for residents of Bathurst and its visitors. Located within Victoria Park, at the intersection of Durham and Hope Road, the Bathurst Adventure Playground is specially built. It provides outdoor opportunities for body-friendly people and a variety of playground products available for disabled persons.

Love cars? The National Motor Racing Museum has a strong sense of community, with nearly all its loan material. At the heart of the museum are Mount Panorama and the Bathurst 1000. The exhibits look at the entire spectrum of motor racing here in Australia. At least one vehicle is on display to reflect the history of speedway, electric, drag, racing, open wheeler, sports car, and touring car. Without a trip to Mt. Panorama, you can not visit Bathurst. Many people take this as the event that put Bathurst on the map. You can either drive your car around the track (mind the road) or walk the circuit on foot.

Be sure to check out the caves in Central NSW for school-age kids, many of which hold an exciting history. Ben Hall’s Cave in the Weddin Mountains National Park near Grenfell is famous for being the hideout of one of the most revered bushrangers in Australia! Or just outside Bathurst, marvel at the limestone formations at Abercrombie Caves. Suppose you want to get away from tourists and coach tours. In that case, Abercrombie Cave is a closely guarded underground local gem with the most massive natural arch in the southern hemisphere. The distinctive characteristics include the historic dance platform for gold miners, built-in 1880.
